I could see horror, anger, and sadness in the faces of the farmers sitting around me. Kent continued:

But our efforts are at the completely opposite end of the spectrum from terminator technologies, transgenic crops and other efforts in the seed industry. And today, we have new allies. Up until five years ago, those of us who grew heirloom seeds had a limited market. All that changed with the flourishing of the rapidly growing Community-Supported Agriculture movement. We are providing at wholesale prices bulk quantities of seeds for eighty-five varieties to CSAs, which will then go into the mouths of thousands more people, who will then immediately get hooked on their richer, fresher flavors. What’s more, we’ve now found some 30,000 nonhybrid seed varieties in this country, and are bringing them back into circulation. Over the years, we’ve sent out at least 750,000 samples of seeds passed on to us from heirloom collectors.
